Defining Obesity

Obesity is defined as a chronic, relapsing disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat that negatively impacts overall health. The American Medical Association (AMA) officially recognized obesity as a disease in 2013, marking a significant shift in how it is treated and understood. It is influenced by a combination of genetic, metabolic, hormonal, environmental, and behavioral factors. Recognizing obesity as a disease shifts the focus to evidence-based treatment and improved patient outcomes.

Body Mass Index (BMI), a commonly used screening tool for obesity, categorizes individuals based on their height and weight. The BMI cut-offs are as follows:

  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5 - 24.9 kg/m²

  • Overweight: BMI 25.0 - 29.9 kg/m²

  • Obesity (Class I): BMI 30.0 - 34.9 kg/m²

  • Obesity (Class II): BMI 35.0 - 39.9 kg/m²

  • Severe Obesity (Class III): BMI ≥ 40.0 kg/m²

Recognizing obesity as a disease helps shift the focus from blame to evidence-based care. At Leon Springs Obesity Medicine, we understand that obesity is a complex condition that requires a compassionate, multidisciplinary approach. Combining novel treatments with individualized care plans, we aim to support our patients in achieving improved health and quality of life.

If you or someone you know is struggling with obesity, remember: there is help, there are solutions, and you do not have to face this journey alone.
